A Relationship with God

By: Jeff Van Beaver

Relationships are something that we deal with on an everyday basis, whether at work, spouse, children, family, friends, and most of all God.  Webster defines relationship as, “the relation connecting or binding participants in a relationship.” Our relationships with others involve people in all walks of life.  I recall a time in my life when I had broken relationship with some friends and what a difficult time in life that was for me. Their friendship had meant so much to me, but I was not willing to build or work on that relationship. After our friendship had mended, our relationship as friends became strong again. It was a great feeling to mend and grow those broken relationships. Whether it be friends, spouse, children, family- we always need to work on strengthening our relationships.

So now we can rejoice with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.
— Romans 5:11

Let’s think of some times in our lives when we had struggles with our friends and the difficulty of those situations. It hurts both us and the other people. Now let’s take this one step further, with our relationship with God. We need to ask ourselves everyday- How is my relationship with God?  The Bible tells us about the proper relationship that we need with him. Romans 5:11 tells us, “So now we can rejoice with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.” A strong relationship with God means that we are his friend. We come closer to him reading the Bible daily, by learning and growing in his Word. We come closer to him by hanging around people who are close to God, and they can build us up as fellow Christians. We come closer to God by attending a Christ centered Bible teaching church.

As our relationship continues to grow with God through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ- we are compelled to tell others about this special relationship with God.  As the verse Acts 1:8 tells us, “When the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in Samaria, and in Judea, and to the ends of the earth.”  My prayer for you is to grow in your relationship with God, and then share that special relationship with others, so they can experience that same friendship with our one and only Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
